Indie or Independent music is a music scene that describes, as the name indicates, the independance of music, independance of the major labels, of the selling out actitude. Indie musicians do not care about selling or being popular, they publish music because they want to share it with people and the play it becase the like to play it.
There are some bands,
however, that decide to go major, that doesn't mean they stop being
indie, as long as they have an actitue of "do it yourself" and the
natural love for music they had in the very beginning, they are
indie; they have control over their decisions.
The indie scene has indeed, music genres. Indie Rock and Indie Pop
are the most popular of those but there is also Post-Rock, Lo-Fi,
Math Rock, Post-hardcore, among others. Both are mix of punk, punk
rock, rock and blues, it is also a kind of alternative rock. They
call indie rock as the new punk, and, as happened with the punk, the
UK is the main country that produces indie rock.
Indie pop is a "sub-genre" of the indie rock, and it is another kind
of alternative rock, the blues and the rock is the main base of it.
Like these genres, the indie scene has quite some others.
On a more personal, I
believe indie music is the genre/scene that cares the most about
their fans and at the same time, they don't care at all. They care,
because they know people listen to them, the don't because
ultimately there's only music in their minds, and that's very
important, the feeling within the songs is very physical.
I love metal music, the complexly within metal is absorbing,
obsessive, the feeling in every note is wonderful; but at the end of
each song, you don't feel the music, you just feel, the anger, the
happiness, the beauty within but somehow, the music, just by itself,
is missing. What happens with indie music is the other way around,
it's only about the music, there are no problems, no dealing with
feelings other than the pleasure of listening to real music. I love
indie rock and post-rock, over any other subgenre of indie, they are
indeed pure.

01. It must be on an
independent label
02. It's about the music
03. Lo-fi good, over-production bad
04. A do-it-yourself attitude
05. Pushing musical boundaries
06. An anti-materialistic attitude
What would this world be without Indie Music? I am so grateful for
all indie music and indie artists out there; I mean I absolutely
love music but the music world today does bug me at times. Yes there
are good artists out there but a lot of it is pretty crappy and some
of the good ones aren't as good as they could be due to the
restrictions they get from their major record company. All that
official stuff aside (I could go on for hours and have had many
discussions about this in the past); the main reason why I love
Indie Music so much is because Indie artists truly love music. You
can hear it comes from their heart and they put their everything
into it, give their all. I can't stand musicians that just make
music for money and would do anything for it (sell themselves out;
that kind of stuff). Indie musicians stay true to themselves and I
really admire that. It's pure music and music should be just that. I
know and met quite a few musicians while studying music (what can I
say; music is my life) and it seemed to me that indie music is more
about the music than anything else. My dream is to work at an indie
label or venue focused on indie music. I did an internship at such a
venue and it was awesome. Great music, nice people, my dream job
really. I do appreciate some major bands out there but Indie Music
is my music. It's in my heart and I sincerely hope independent music
will be around forever. Music has to be about music, not money, not
fame. Music. Okay okay, and fun =). Indie music makes me not lose
hope in the world of music. As long as there is indie music, not all
is lost; there's still good music, real music. Music as it should
be.
Indie music has a huge audience right now. Indie-labeled bands like
Arcade Fire and The Shins are debuting albums at the top of the
Billboard charts; Sufjan Stevens sells out enormous national tours
without even having a Myspace, general website or major label, and
this music fest in Chicago that only hosts indie acts is bringing in
more than 25,000 attendees in a weekend. By
